Everyone was gone. Everyone. The loneliness inside the house pressed down on me, suffocating me with my own fear. I sat in the floor until darkness permeated every corner. When I finally found the will to stand, I stumbled toward my last friend left in the quiet-as-death house.

I needed what I knew was in that little box in the fridge like an addict needs heroin. I broke two nails with my misguided clawing, trying to get the cooler open. I found it—the only comfort left to me in the world—and snipped the neck with trembling hands. I nicked a finger in the process, but didn’t feel the wound. There were already several hundred scoring up my insides.

Caelyn had finally explained she was slipping human blood to me, in small doses, so my body could grow accustomed to it. This would help transition my cravings, taking the edge off once I’d become a full vampire. “We must be careful to do it a little at a time,” she’d told me when I’d once begged for more in my coffee.

There was no one here to regulate me now. I tipped the blood bag up toward the ceiling and drank to my heart’s full content. It was the only love left to me now. When it was empty, far too soon for my liking, I cut open another and downed it…then another. When the third was nearly drained, all the new rooms in my head, housing my myriad of thoughts, were growing and expanding, each of them stretching far away from the others. One room opened to reveal a peculiar worry I never imagined I’d have. There were only two bags left in that magic box. Who would bring me more? How could I get my hands on more? There was no one left to teach me…help me…love me…

I felt heated bloodtears brim up, casting the world in crimson. When the first one spilled over, I shrieked, “Now you show up! Thanks a lot!” The dam broke and many more flowed, transforming my face into a macabre mask.

“Mom…Dad…Ron…Susie…” I whined out the names miserably before crawling halfway into the fridge to claim a fourth bag. I’d sucked down half before comprehending the mistake I’d made. I would find out later, under proper instruction, I’d become what other vampires referred to as ‘blood-drunk.’ Alcohol had never crossed my lips, but for our kind, an overabundance of blood produced a similar effect.

In the moment, I didn’t understand the whirling tornado moving through my brain. All my pain and loss swirled together, congealing into a massive, black entity, looming larger than life and threatening to swallow me whole. Nausea swirled up from my stomach to pair with the funnel in my head. I fought to hold onto the blood in my stomach. It was all I had left.

Blackness swirled around my eyes, beckoning. I dropped the precious bag, the regret thrown distant by the chaos in my brain. It crashed against the stone tile and sprayed crimson, illuminated by the light of the open fridge door.
